What is Essiac Tea?

Essiac tea is a blend of herbs that was originally used by the Ojibwa Native American tribe in Canada.

The tea gained popularity in the early 20th century when a Canadian nurse, Rene Caisse, began using it as a natural remedy for cancer patients.

The name “Essiac” is Caisse spelled backward, honoring her significant contributions to promoting this herbal concoction.

The Four Main Ingredients

Essiac tea is typically composed of four primary herbs, each with its own unique health benefits:

Burdock Root

Known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, burdock root is believed to help purify the blood and support liver function.

Sheep Sorrel

This herb is rich in vitamins and minerals, and it is thought to have immune-boosting and detoxifying effects.

Slippery Elm Bark

Slippery elm is known for its soothing properties, particularly for the digestive tract, helping to alleviate inflammation and irritation.

Turkish Rhubarb Root

Indian Rhubarb Root is often used in traditional medicine, Indian rhubarb root supports liver health and helps cleanse the body of toxins.

Secret Formula

Secret Formula:

6 ½ cups cut up Burdock Root (cut into pea-sized pieces) ~ Burdock Root: https://amzn.to/4fqD1Ze

For centuries, burdock root has been regarded as an effective blood purifier that neutralizes and eliminates poisons from the body. Studies have shown anti-tumor activity in burdock. Japanese scientists have isolated an anti-mutation property in burdock, which they call the “B factor.” A memo from the WHO revealed that burdock is effective against HIV.

1 pound power Sheep Sorrel (including the roots) ~ Sheep Sorrel: https://amzn.to/4fnoBsG

Caisse isolated sheep sorrel leaves as the main essiac herb that dissolves cancerous tumors. Sheep sorrel contains aloe emodin, a natural substance that shows significant anti-leukemic activity. Sheep sorrel contains antioxidants, is diuretic and has been used to check hemorrhages. Be sure to include the roots of Sheep Sorrel as well, as they are essential.

¼ cup powered Slippery Elm Bark ~ Slippery Elm Bark Powder: https://amzn.to/4eZxBV4

Slippery elm is well-known for its soothing properties. It reduces inflammations such as sore throat, diarrhea, and urinary problems. It contains beta-sitosterol, which has shown anti-cancer activity.

1 ounce powdered Turkish Rhubarb Root ~ Rhubarb Root: https://amzn.to/4f6k0v8

“Turkey Rhu - Barb” has been shown to have anti-tumor activity. It is a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial.

The preparation of Essiac Tea is as important as the formula itself. Essiac is a decoction, not an infusion. An infusion is what people do when they put a tea bag in a cup of hot water. Generally speaking, an infusion tends to extract vitamins and volatile oils. A decoction is used to extract minerals, etc. from the roots, bark, or seeds by boiling for several minutes and then allowing the herbs to steep for several hours. Entrepreneurs often sell Essiac imitations in tincture form (herbs in alcohol) or in gelatin capsules; neither form is Essiac because Essiac is a decoction.

1. Using a stainless-steel pot and lid, boil ½ cup of herb mix in one gallon of pure, unchlorinated water for 10 minutes.

2. Turn off heat and allow herbs to steep for 12 hours.

3. Heat up tea to steaming, but not boiling. Allow herbs to settle for a couple minutes.

4. Strain off hot liquid into sterilized canning jars. The remaining pulp can be used for healing poultices.

5. Refrigerate tea. For long-term storage use boiling water bath canning method and store in cool, dark, dry place.

The Potential Health Benefits

Essiac tea offers a natural, holistic approach to health and wellness, drawing from ancient traditions and modern testimonies. Its unique blend of herbs works together to support the immune system, detoxify the body, reduce inflammation, and promote digestive health. Whether you’re a long-time enthusiast of natural remedies or a curious newcomer, Essiac tea is worth exploring as a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Detoxification

Essiac tea is known for its detoxifying properties, aiding in the elimination of toxins from the body and promoting overall organ health, particularly the liver and kidneys.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects

Many of the herbs in Essiac tea have natural anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation and pain in the body.

Immune System Support

The combination of herbs in Essiac tea works synergistically to boost the immune system, helping the body to fight off infections and diseases more effectively.

Digestive Health
Antioxidant Properties

Slippery elm and other ingredients in the tea help soothe the digestive tract, making it beneficial for those with digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or gastritis.

The antioxidants present in Essiac tea help combat free radicals, reducing oxidative stress and potentially lowering the risk of chronic diseases.

How to Use Essiac Tea

For best results, it is recommended to take Essiac tea on an empty stomach. Start with a small dose, such as 1-4 ounces per day, and gradually increase as your body adjusts. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new herbal regimen, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking other medications.

For preventive purposes, people take one to two ounces per day diluted with about ½ cup of hot water. Be sure to drink plenty of water (at least half gallon) each day to help flush toxins out of your system.

Should you have cancer, you should take Essiac three times a day. Do not eat or drink anything (except water) one hour before to one hour after taking Essiac. Essiac tea is compatible with other alternative cancer treatments, except Cancell. DO NOT TAKE PROTOCEL with Essiac tea, since they tend to neutralize each other.

Enhancing Detoxification with Coffee Enemas

To maximize the detoxification benefits of Essiac tea, incorporating coffee enemas into your routine can be highly effective. Coffee enemas have been used for decades as a method to cleanse the liver and support overall detoxification.

How Coffee Enemas Work: When coffee is introduced into the colon via an enema, it stimulates the liver to produce more bile, which helps to flush out toxins. This process can enhance the body’s natural detoxification pathways and improve overall liver function. For more information on coffee enemas click here.

The Origins of Essiac

In the 1920s, Rene Caisse, a dedicated nurse working in a Canadian hospital, encountered a remarkable story that would change her life and the lives of countless others. One day, she met an elderly patient who was 80 years old at the time Nurse Rene Caisse met her. She had been cured of breast cancer 30 years earlier. She and her husband had been searching for gold in Canada. She had developed breast cancer and was admitted to a Toronto hospital to undergo a masectomy. She decided not to undergo the operation and returned back to the camp.

This woman shared her incredible journey of how she received remarkable healing through the use of a special herbal tea given to her by an old Indian Shaman living in the wilderness of northern Canada. He told her he could cure her cancer. He showed her certain herbs that grew in the area and advised her to make a tea out of them and drink it every day.

The Discovery and Initial Success

Fascinated by the story, Rene wrote down the herbs and the method of preparing the tea. Soon after, her aunt was diagnosed with metastatic stomach cancer and given only six months to live. With the attending physician's permission, Rene administered the herbal tea to her aunt, who astonishingly lived another 21 years without any recurrence of cancer. Encouraged by this success, Dr. R.O. Fisher asked Rene Caisse to treat some of his incurable patients in this way. Other doctors learned about it from him, and they began sending patients for whom they could no longer do anything to for.

Rene Caisse declared that "the tea is not harmful, relieves pain, reduces the spread of cancer and prolongs the lives of the terminally ill."

Building a Legacy

Rene named the tea "Essiac," her surname spelled backward. The tea quickly gained a reputation for relieving pain, reducing the spread of cancer, and prolonging the lives of terminally ill patients. Despite this, the Canadian Ministry of Health refused to authorize formal research and even attempted to arrest Rene for practicing medicine without a license. However, she continued her work under the protection of prominent doctors.

Rene’s treatments, both oral and injectable, showed promising results in laboratory mice inoculated with human sarcoma. The tumors receded, and the mice's tissues were spared further damage. These early successes prompted Rene to dedicate herself fully to her research and patient care, treating around 30 patients a day without charge.

Expansion and Recognition

Rene's efforts were recognized in 1933 when the town of Bracebridge allowed her to use the old British Lion Hotel as a clinic for a nominal rent of $1.00 per month. Here, she treated hundreds of patients until 1942. Her mother's remarkable recovery from liver cancer using Essiac further bolstered her reputation.

Interest in Rene’s work spread to the United States, where she treated terminal patients at a Chicago clinic under medical supervision, impressing even the most skeptical doctors. Despite offers to establish clinics in the U.S., Rene chose to remain in Canada to maintain the integrity and reputation of her work.

Battles with the Medical Establishment

Rene faced relentless opposition from the medical establishment. Despite a petition with 55,000 signatures advocating for the legalization of Essiac, the proposal narrowly failed. The Cancer Commission’s investigation into her work was criticized as biased and unfair, dismissing the testimonies of many of her patients and doctors.

Later Years and Enduring Impact

From 1959 to 1978, Rene collaborated with Dr. Charles Brusch, personal physician to President J.F. Kennedy. Their research affirmed the positive effects of Essiac on cancer patients. In 1977, Rene attempted to legalize Essiac through a deal with Resperin but continued to face challenges.

Rene Caisse passed away on December 26, 1978, at the age of 90. Despite her groundbreaking work, she never commercialized Essiac, maintaining her commitment to the patients who depended on her.

Conclusion

Rene Caisse’s dedication to healing and her resilience in the face of opposition have left an enduring legacy. Her discovery of Essiac tea, a natural herbal remedy, has provided hope and relief to many. Though she faced numerous challenges, her story remains a testament to the power of natural medicine and the importance of perseverance in the pursuit of healing.

A Requiem for Rene

Rene Caisse passed away after she suffered a broken leg in a fall on December 26, 1978, at the age of 90. An obituary was published in the 'Bracebridge Examiner' in her honor (click here).

Rene Caisse administered Essiac both through injections and orally. She never began treatment without a written diagnosis signed by qualified doctors and always operated under their supervision. Caisse's success stories were more numerous than those of anyone else in the world. Although she never claimed it could cure cancer, many of her patients and the doctors she worked with did. Her objectives were to manage the cancer, ease the pain, and prove that Essiac had big value and was help make it acceptable to medical science. Despite her achievements, she often faced opposition and persecution from state authorities. She narrowly avoided arrest for practicing medicine without a license. People protected her due to her popularity, the support of the town committee, prominent doctors, and the many patients she had helped.

Rene never published her formula. The only person she trusted to help her make Essiac was her best friend, Mary McPherson, who knew the formula by heart. Before she died, she signed over the rights to the Essiac formula to two parties: Resperin Corporation of Toronto, to test, manufacture and distribute it, and to a long-trusted friend, Dr. Charles Brusch of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Director of the Brusch Clinic and personal physician to former President John F. Kennedy. Dr. Brusch himself had cancer of the lower bowel, which completely disappeared after Essiac treatments. Brusch once stated, “I know Essiac has curing potential. It can lessen the condition of the individual, control it, and it can cure it.”

Rene Caisse’s legacy continues to inspire those in search of natural remedies and alternative treatments. Her determination, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her patients stand as a testament to her character and the potential of Essiac Tea.

The story of Essiac Tea and Nurse Rene Caisse is not just a tale of discovery...it's one of perseverance, selflessness, and the relentless pursuit of healing and doing the right thing no matter what it takes.
